Best-Named Arts Grant

Critical Fierceness Grant

Latham Zearfoss started Chances Dances in 2005 to produce monthly LGBTQ dance parties, but over the years its scope has expanded. In 2008 the organization launched its biannual Critical Fierceness grant, which gives up to $500 to Chicago-based, queer-identified individuals or groups for any sort of artistic purpose. Past awards have gone to musicians, writers, filmmakers, and visual artists, among others. Chances Dances has also recently announced a second grant in the name of transgender artist Mark Aguhar, who died March 12, aged 24. The Mark Aguhar Memorial Fund will provide as much as $1,000 to "feminine-spectrum queer artists of color."
