The theater was perfectly within their rights. No one is allowed to bring outside food and drink into a theater. This has nothing to do with civil liberties. Theaters make a tremendous profit off of concessions and they don't want people sneaking in sodas, snacks, or candy. Same thing as not being allowed to bring a Starbuck's latte with you to a brunch place and not ordering their coffee. Now obviously you were't sneaking in candy or soda, but it would be awfully difficult for a theater to draw a clear line between what distinguishes traditional movie snacks from any other form of food.
