Usually when New York bassist and composer Ben Allison rolls into town for a weekend engagement at the Green Mill, he's just released a new album. That's not the case this weekend—his most recent is still last year's Action-Refraction (Palmetto)—but in some ways this visit is even more exciting. Alongside longtime guitarist Steve Cardenas, Allison's band will include some new blood: second guitarist Brandon Seabrook, who plays on two Action-Refraction tracks, and buoyant, shape-shifting drummer Allison Miller. Allison's latest record flirts with rock and includes tunes by PJ Harvey, Neil Young, and Donny Hathaway, and I'm expecting this lineup to ratchet up the firepower. Seabrook is one of New York's most exciting players, both on electric guitar and tenor banjo, whether he's bringing precise postpunk fury to his own Seabrook Power Plant or bucolic twang to the band led by saxophonist Jeremy Udden. I can't wait to hear him engage with the more polished Cardenas. —Peter Margasak
