Collectors of vintage paperbacks, pulp magazines, and the pinup-in-distress art that goes with them will convene this weekend in Elgin for the second annual Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show. Attorney Doug Ellis, coauthor of the Adventure House Guide to the Pulps (and the owner of 12,000 vintage magazines), says this year's event offers 70 dealers, 100 tables of work by the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Dashiell Hammett, and a festival of films based on pulp stories. The films begin Friday, March 22, at 8, with Hawk of the Wilderness and The Return of Dr. X (1939, starring Humphrey Bogart in an adaptation of a story that appeared in Detective Fiction Weekly) and continue all weekend. Live attractions include Marvel illustrator Jim Steranko (Captain America and X-Men) and Zorro artist Joel Naprstek, who'll paint a picture during an all-day demonstration Saturday to be auctioned that night. The exhibits will be open from 10 to 5 Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, at the Ramada Inn, 345 W. River Road in Elgin. Admission is $10 for the entire weekend, free for kids under 13. Check it out at www.pulpshow.com or call Ellis at 847-875-4603.
