Mike Judge, who created Beavis and Butt-head, and legions of animators send the two vulgar teenage virgins on a trip across the country in pursuit of a television to watch—theirs is stolen in the opening sequence (1996). Judge and cowriter Joe Stillman string together one-liners and sight gags with enough of a plot to create characters as well as provoke knee-jerk laughs. A hallucination sequence and a scene set in a Vegas nightclub are so engrossing you forget they're animated; even the showiest techniques don't detract from the story. The boys' one-note hopes and dreams place them so comfortably between charming and pathetic that it's almost disappointing when they're empowered by a simple plot twist.
