Set behind the scenes at a storefront theater, Benjamin Brownson's romantic comedy traces the arc of two backstage romances through a season of Shakespeare productions. The infatuation of Romeo and Juliet turns to comic misdirection during A Midsummer Night's Dream, and finally, with Hamlet, treachery and anguish creep in. If Brownson intended a wry comment on the grandiosity of theater folk, it doesn't come through in Thomas Murray's earnestly directed premiere for Broken Nose Theatre. Playing recent theater majors performing in a Chicago storefront, Murray's cast doesn't have to reach far. The result is a set of convincing portrayals that lack perspective: this may be dead on for the industry crowd, but it's inside baseball for the rest of us. —Keith Griffith
