Beatbox Volume 3

While other improv troupes dabble in hip-hop, Beatbox creates a crazy hybrid that combines the strengths of improv, with its focus on action and characterization, and rap, with its energetic, word-drunk wordplay. Not all the bits worked the night I saw the show: the performers relied too heavily on quick, easy jokes, sacrificing dramatic power and character development. But the witty rap--delivered by, among others, free-style virtuoso Ross Bryant--more than made up for the occasional lapses, giving the show a jolt whenever things seemed to be slipping into ennui. How long before these guys create an entire evening of scenes performed in rap? Through 9/9: Fri 10:30 PM. Second City Training Center, Donny's Skybox Studio, Piper's Alley, 1608 N. Wells (fourth floor), 312-337-3992.
