Battle: Los Angeles

Packed with gung ho war-movie clichés and subpar shock-and-awe visual effects, this terminally stupid sci-fi adventure pits an army of tentacled aliens piloting Transformer-style robots against a platoon of stoic warriors from the Fifth Marines' Second Battalion (the legendary "Retreat, hell!" battalion of World War I). These gritty rainbow marines—multigender, multiethnic and multistereotyped—are led by a staff sergeant with a checkered past (Aaron Eckhart) who eventually inspires his troops to compare him to John Wayne. Though the aliens are supposedly attacking the entire planet, the key action here centers on Santa Monica, where the marines find time to rescue three adorable children, a weeping father (Michael Peña), and a sexy veterinarian (Bridget Moynahan). Jonathan Liebesman directed.
