Based on a notoriously weird 1992 Weekly World News article about a half-bat, half-human hybrid, this off-Broadway hit is also something of a hybrid—part horror story, part camp musical comedy. The parts don't always cohere. There are times you can tell three people had a hand in the show's composition: writers Keythe Farley and Brian Fleming and composer Laurence O'Keefe. This is especially true in a rough, uneven production like the one at Village Players, in which the leads are strong (Mark Lebeau Jr. is an especially fine Bat Boy) but too many of the supporting roles are taken by singers who can't sing, actors who can't act, and dancers who can't dance. The result is a production packed with forgettable characters, songs that are hard to understand, and plot twists you can see coming a mile away. —Jack Helbig
