As if improvising a musical weren't difficult enough, Blaine Swen pulls it off solo. Well, almost--he gets great help from keyboardist Dave Asher, who's unafraid to challenge Swen with bold shifts in key or style. At the show I saw, Swen turned into a king and his R&B-crooning guards, a pair of lovers, an ad writer and his cartoon mascots, and a clothesline who lamented "My only friends are these clothespins." It's just as much fun watching the charismatic Swen search for the next rhyme and character as it is to experience them when they arrive. The excellent improv group Bullet Lounge opens. --Ryan Hubbard
