Baseball is the ostensible subject of this collection of autobiographical solo pieces from Tellin' Tales Theatre. But since three of the four performers are Cubs fans (the last slot is filled by a different pinch hitter at each performance), the real subjects are doomed hope and crushing failure. Storytellers Tekki Lomnicki, Lindsay Porter, and Marsha Harman take turns describing the season when the team broke their hearts—1969, 2003, and 2006, respectively—and the range of responses the disappointment engendered, from despair to a faith that passeth all understanding. The results are funny, nostalgic, and surprisingly moving, even if, like me, you think that baseball is duller than dirt. In different ways, each woman turns a fan's lament into a poignant prayer for the impossible.—Zac Thompson
