Re: “The Seventh Seal

I can relate to Kerr. I too think the film is overrated, though you must say it is pretty daring for its time. I find the premise very interesting: to ask answers of Death, because you get none from God. And to buy time to settle one's doubts. It is very interesting, but in fact, the film itself is just a string of caricatures, situations and symbols to comment on this idea. There's no dramatic drive, no cinematic narrative (though the imagery is pretty overwhelming and poetic) and many symbols are pretty obvious and mundane. Still, it is an interesting film, if not for the subject and the ideas of course. Bergman has made so much better films like Smultronstallet, Tystnaden and Persona, though many of his films are indeed pretentious and a-cinematic. Still, this film offers a daring insight in the psyche of the filmmaker self and the conclusion, i must say, is pretty impressive: an inescapable death, yet in the end it seems, Death itself is not to be feared, only our fears of dying are.
