William Luce's 1997 two-hander catches the great John Barrymore (brother of Lionel and Ethel, grandfather of Drew) in 1942, on the brink of what may be either his comeback or his final bow. This precarious moment gives Luce an excuse to have Barrymore publicly reflect on his life, delving into his career on stage and screen, relationships with siblings and wives, and unsuccessful battle with the bottle. Despite a shoestring production, Michael Pacas superbly recreates the look and style of Barrymore. Onstage for the entire evening, Pacas plays well off both the audience and Scott Sumerak, as Barrymore's frustrated, tart-tongued Prompter. --Jack Helbig
