Hard rock isn’t doing too well right now. Once one of the primary facets of pop music, in recent years it’s fallen off the airwaves and out of the charts, dwindling from a ubiquitous sound to what might almost be called a niche interest. For listeners still in love with the style and unsatisfied with classic-rock radio, Atlanta band Royal Thunder must be a lifesaver. Last year’s sludged-up CVI (Relapse) draws from the same bluesy well that’s been fueling hard rock for a half century, and at different points it recalls Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers, Danzig, and the peak years of the grunge period—plus front woman Mlny Parsonz belts out furious vocals that smuggle pop hooks beneath a cloak of banshee screaming. —Miles Raymer Baroness headline (and tomorrow they play Lollapalooza).
