Barefoot in the Park

Neil Simon's early hit, filmed (just barely) by Gene Saks in 1967 and starring Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, shortly before their acting personas congealed. Fonda is fresh and sexy, though Redford is something of a lump: the Simon wisecracks don't emerge gracefully from his sculptured WASP throat. According to Simon, this story of newlyweds confronting their first New York apartment is largely autobiographical, which may account for its relatively (and pleasantly) loose structure. Nothing special, but it's a decent example of a vanished genre—the small character comedy. With Charles Boyer and Mildred Natwick. 105 min.
