Re: “Crashing the boys’ club: independent women directors in the 60s and 70s

One last point......where are the current class of women directors and producers? In this day and age there are almost no females in top positions in Hollywood.

Re: “Crashing the boys’ club: independent women directors in the 60s and 70s

If you want an interesting story look back to the almost forgotten and largely ignored history of the women directors and filmakers of the early 20th century. As powerful as Cecil B. DeMille, Lois Weber, left Universal in 1917 to form her own studio. She made 100s of films. Mabel Normand was a writer, producer, director and worked on many of the Charlie Chaplin films. She had her own studio and production company. June Mathis was the first female executive in Hollywood. There were dozens of female directors and producers in Hollywood in those days. The coming Depression, the adoption of the Hays code and changing societal norms regarding the place of women in the workplace all served to hinder the progessing role women were achieving in the making of films. One of the few female directors to survive was Dorothy Arzner who did so because she kept her storylines very innocuous. Even so, Dance, Girl, Dance has a strong feminist viewpoint. Unusual because after the adoption of the Hays code strong feminist viewpoints were cut out of filmaking. Prior to the code stories featuring birth control, women in the workplace, etc. were the bread and butter of the female led studios. The history of film in the early days is surprisingly filled with many stories of females leading the work --stories which have largely been forgotten or ignored.

Re: “Baha'i follower Lucia Pane talks nine-sided buildings, the unity of science and religion, and more

Thank you for that very interesting article, Lucia Pane. I have a few questions for you. Other than modest dress are there any requirements concerning dress for men and women? Also do you follow any particular dietary laws?

Re: “The Greatest Ever Chicago Book Tournament

The list is so far from complete that it would be impossible to consider the outcome valid.
