A lot of left-leaning folks have this fantasy of a hip Barack Obama that just isn't borne out by the facts. The president has been on Leno but not Letterman, and if that doesn't constitute an image problem I don't know what does. The real conceptual leap for this production imagining Obama with a late-night talk show of his own isn't that he might banter with former personal assistant Reggie Love before greeting Tom Cruise or Beyonce—it's in seeing him as a wisecracker at all. Patrick Rowland has his POTUS impression down like a 2009 employment report, acing Obama's frequent uhs and snarky laugh. The show's monologue and audience-interaction shtick are great, and watch for gestures from the deadpan secret agent in the back. But Rowland and company haven't yet figured out how to get laughs from the interviews with actors impersonating celebrities, which take up roughly half of the hour-long show. —Asher Klein
