Last year’s The Dirt That Makes You Drown won local band Bang! Bang! well-deserved kudos, and this spring they shared a track with Common on the Hood Internet’s Chicago-centric mashup mix. Tonight they’re celebrating the release of a new five-track EP, The Industry (Morphius), which follows the same unbeatable formula of their past records and does it even tighter. In a better world, this driving, new-wavey, new-school cock rock would light up restless kids at skating rinks across the heartland—“Sleep in Thunder” would make an awesome soundtrack for getting laid in a van with a painting of a Viking on it. Some of the more thrusting, anthemic beats deliver the same white-knuckled inevitability as “Eye of the Tiger,” where you just know there’s only one way this song can go, but the music’s playfulness makes it sound not dated but timeless—especially on “New Hi,” when singer Gretta Fine lets loose with a Nina Hagen yowl. A companion release called The Industry Box includes the new EP, all three Bang! Bang! studio records, and some bonuses, including the Spank Rock remix of “Something More.” This is the band’s last show with drummer Nick Kraska. —Monica Kendrick
