Spanish filmmakers Carles Bosch and Josep M. Domenech were assigned by Catalan public television to cover the 1994 exodus of rafters (balseros) trying to make their way from Cuba to Florida; to make this 2002 documentary, they tracked seven refugees for seven years, starting from the time they built their flimsy crafts. Six of their subjects were detained at Guantanamo naval base for a year before being resettled in various locations in the U.S. The film looks great—it even includes some sinuous crane shots—but none of the rafters is heard to say anything about the Castro regime, or about his rights in his new home. Despite the heroic exertions of the rafters and filmmakers, this apolitical film is oddly lacking in drama. In English and subtitled Spanish. 120 min.
