The climax of this hard-driving action picture is so stilted that I'll just dispense with the plot, which pits rumpled FBI man Jeremiah Ecks (Antonio Banderas) against sleek martial-arts punisher Sever (Lucy Liu) for possession of a kidnapped child. Here are the best one-liners and images of destruction: During a shoot-out at a mall, a cop plummets away from the camera in slow motion, landing on the roof of a car. Surveying the carnage afterward, an FBI honcho remarks, “What happened—somebody get too much foam in their latte?” As Banderas is being transported to prison, an explosion sends his bus sliding down the highway on its side. Asked about her impressive collection of firearms, Liu replies, “Some women buy shoes . . . ” And during the final fury in a scrap-metal yard, an explosion sends two junked cars flying into the air along parallel paths. Before seeing this film I couldn't understand why the producers had given it a subtitle; afterward I realized “Ecks vs. Sever” was probably the full script. Directed by Wych Kaosayananda. 91 min.
