Bailiwick Repertory Directors' Festival

Bailiwick Repertory's 11th annual showcase of projects by emerging directors features programs of one-acts, ranging from one to three per evening, that run the gamut from established classical and contemporary selections to avant-garde rarities and untested original material. The fest runs August 2 through 25 at Bailiwick Repertory, Bailiwick Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-883-1090. Performance times are Mondays-Wednesdays at 7:30 PM; there is no show Tuesday, August 3. Tickets are $8 per evening.

Festival listings run on a week-by-week basis; following is the schedule for August 2 through 4 (subject to change).

MONDAY, AUGUST 2

Hamletmachine

Controversial German experimental playwright Heiner Muller's variation on Shakespeare's tragedy, translated by Carl Weber, is directed by Robert Barrie and choreographed by Eduardo Vilardo.

Hamlet Crucified

Shakespeare's melancholy Dane is also the focus of novice playwright Kevin Phelan's script, which examines Hamlet's identification with the martyrdom of Jesus and seeks to use the classic text "to explore our collective morals or lack thereof," according to a press release. This world premiere is staged by Roosevelt University grad student David M. Schmitz.

After You

Fantod Theatre member Kristin Larson directs Steven Dietz's drama, about two ex-lovers who perform an unusual ritual in an attempt to discover what lingers between them.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4

Earth, Water, Air, Fire

Director Tom Small's adaptation of four folktales--each centered on one of the four elements--blends storytelling, dance, puppetry, mime, and song.

Sizzle Me

This excerpt from josh Brewster's comedy directed by Elizabeth Marino, concerns a telemarketing firm and a TV news reporter competing to expose and exploit the same scandalous story.
