Bad Turn Worse

A dimwitted farmhand in middle-of-nowhere Texas, craving a wild weekend with his college-bound girlfriend and best friend, steals 20 grand from the safe of his crooked boss. When the boss finds out, he forces them to repay the cash by robbing a cotton gin that's laundering Mexican drug money, and their inexperience as criminals leads to infighting and double-crossing. This cowboy noir (2013) works fine as a genre riff, but screenwriter Dutch Southern draws so liberally on the work of Jim Thompson, Cormac McCarthy, and the Coen brothers that he ought to take them all out for drinks. Simon and Zeke Hawkins directed; the supporting cast includes William Devane and Mark Pellegrino.
