These 12 lesbian films and videos express widely, er, wildly diverse attitudes toward sexuality. Karisa Durr's Grade AA Butt makes no bones about depicting women's asses (humorously) as if they were meat. Shots emphasizing the sensuality of kneading dough in Nora Sqilagyi and Alex Marshall's Pastry Girls are intercut with images of a woman being massaged. Fuck Film by Kadet Kuhne makes a joke of object fetishism by showing a woman in a sexual relationship with strips of celluloid. The disjunct editing and obviously artificial sets of Hours of the Idolate, an imitation western starring a "pussy posse," allow filmmaker Anie Stanley to bring out the eroticism inherent in the genre's traditional motifs, including of course the gun. My own favorite, Quvvrr by Texas Tomboy, is also the most explicitly erotic: a woman masturbates with her finger and a dildo. This is not, however, presented as a feast for male eyes; instead the music and the nervous movements of her body and hand interact in subtle and shifting ways with rapid cutting between different views to create a rhythmic eroticism, producing a cinematic representation of sexual pleasure from one woman's point of view. The rhythms encourage the viewer to feel along with her rather than insert him/herself into the action. Also shown will be works by Amy Yunis, Romy Suskin, Jennifer Reeder, Sadie Benning, Shoshanah Oppenheim, and Sophie Constantinou. The program is part of the Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival. Halsted Street Cafe, 3641 N. Halsted, Saturday, November 9, 8:00, 773-384-0048 or 773-384-5533.
