Re: “Hit-and-run crashes are all too common in Chicago

Thanks for taking up a problem that doesn't get enough attention, John. I was in a hit and run on my bike about ten years ago when I was hit by a Hummer and was lucky to make it out with just a gnarly leg contusion. Still, it was a traumatic experience and made worse by the fact that the driver took off. I even had to ward off a bystander who tried to steal my wallet while I was in a state of shock from the collision. Fortunately I had a friend close by to help me.

The fact that the percentage of fatal hit and runs over the past ten years has been so high should be motivation for the City to consider more severe consequences. CDOT's doing a lot of good things to design a city that's safer for pedestrians and cyclists, but enforcement needs to be a part of that, as well.

Re: “Rahm announces another "new initiative" that's decades old

Another effect of this initiative that I think is worth discussing is the long term scarring of blocks that will experience high numbers of teardowns. I think that in lower income areas you're much more likely to see a rehab of an existing building than new construction, so some of these areas on the south and west sides that will be affected by this initiative will be seeing other negative effects of this program for years to come in the way of unkept lots that gather trash and vermin. Blocks with high numbers of vacant lots also carry negative connotations to those who might be looking to purchase property or rent in the area. I'm not saying these effects are worse than the crime and drug addicts that vacant buildings may attract, but it would be nice to see some compromise in the City's approach. Maybe work with some non-profits who work in this field to get the properties that are in better condition rehabbed for affordable housing rather than demo'ed. It seems like that would be a lot less controversial than partnering with an organization like CeaseFire.
