Inspired by concert video shot on a fan's cell phone, the Beastie Boys decided to document their October 2004 homecoming show at Madison Square Garden by distributing digicams to 50 audience members in strategic positions and editing their coverage into a kind of authorized bootleg. The resulting feature conveys the frenetic energy and first-person perspective of the concert experience (including bathroom breaks and annoying audience members). Eventually the shaky, grainy visuals grow tiresome, but director Nathaniel Hornblower (aka Beastie Boy Adam Yauch) keeps things lively with a variety of editing tricks and sly humor (the opening crawl spoofs Brian De Palma's Scarface, and there are lingering shots of Ben Stiller furiously attempting to rap). R, 90 min.
