A devotee of French cinema, U.S. director Ra'up McGee traveled to Paris to score a production deal for his debut feature; the resulting thriller (2004) may not be a great statement, but its accent is perfect. The elegant cast includes Laurent Lucas (With a Friend Like Harry) as a hit man looking to get out, Irene Jacob (The Double Life of Veronique) as his sweetheart from childhood, Jean-Claude Dreyfus (The Lady and the Duke) as a merciless crime boss, and Dinara Drukarova (Since Otar Left . . . ) as his ambivalent lieutenant. McGee has taken Hitchcock's idea of the MacGuffin to such an extreme that the plot becomes a set of nesting dolls with nothing at the center, but the players conjure up a smoky mood of existential sadness. In French with subtitles. 110 min.
