A 48-year-old restaurateur sexy enough to eclipse his own cuisine on a magazine cover, Richard Gere falls for the eternally twentysomething Winona Ryder, whose effervescence is obscured by froufrou accessories that are supposed to define her character as fragile and artistic. We know for most of this strained, insipid romance exactly where it's slowly going: Gere's womanizer—a term defined by Ryder in the nauseatingly self-referential dialogue—will be changed by love, and Ryder's innocent, who changes him, will make the ultimate sacrifice. The inevitable isn't worth the wait. Joan Chen (Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl) directed a screenplay by Allison Burnett. 105 min.
