Tom Arvetis directs a script by Carlos Murillo that's like a sunnier combination of El Norte and Pan's Labyrinth. Gabi Castillo's father abandons their family on her first day at Northside College Prep, the real-life selective-enrollment high school. While she struggles with his departure and life at a new school, Gabi finds herself dreaming of trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border with the help of the sly El Coyote, who's more interested in her stuffed rabbit. In a play seemingly intended for children, Murillo's handling of adult subject matter (illegal immigration, sexuality, class struggle) is deft, but it's slightly overshadowed by some sagging pacing. The kids seemed to enjoy it; the strong acting helps. —Tal Rosenberg
