Following a trio of features about marginalized immigrants in the east (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo), the gifted Iranian-American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani heads for the heartland, and the mainstream, for this disappointing tale of an Iowa seed salesman (Dennis Quaid) butting heads with his auto-racing son (Zac Efron). Bahrani wrote the screenplay with first-timer Hallie Elizabeth Newton; like the recent Promised Land, it clumsily showcases an environmental issue—in this case, the corporate strong-arm tactics used to promote GMOs—through routine interpersonal drama. An actor of some range (cf. Far From Heaven), Quaid is typecast here as a pushy dumbbell, and Heather Graham is on hand too, typecast as a pair of legs in the air. With Clancy Brown and Red West.
