Asimina Chremos says that, after doing her cabaret-style Zeibekika last January, her aim in CutUp was to "recommit to dancing." For the new solo work, she says, she was thinking about sewing, about following the body's thread of movement--she often improvises--and about discontinuity and rupture. The first half of the 45-minute show is accompanied by Carol Genetti's snipped and overlapped tape loops of spoken phrases and mechanical sounds; Chremos calls this the "black" section, and it does close with a chilling image. The second half is accompanied by five members of "circus punk marching band" Mucca Pazza on tuba, electric guitar, mandolin, accordion, and trombone--and it's a stitch, so to speak, especially when the band moves around onstage. At a rehearsal Chremos asked them to improvise music that would "support" the way she dances, that had "continuity despite the little things going on." Sure enough, their blats, plinks, and breathing sounds somehow underscored Chremos's sensitive, nuanced, yet strongly grounded sense of who she is in space. a Fri-Sun 12/15-12/17, 8 PM, Link's Hall, 3435 N.
