FESTIVAL

Asian American Showcase

Presented by the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media and the Gene Siskel Film Center, the 16th annual Asian American Showcase continues Friday through Thursday, April 8 through 14. Among the features screening this week are Helie Lee's comedy MACHO LIKE ME (Fri 4/8, 8:15 PM, and Mon 4/11, 8 PM), about a woman who spends six months living as a man; Iris K. Shim's documentary THE HOUSE OF SUH (Sat 4/9, 6 PM, and Wed 4/13, 8:15 PM), which chronicles a notorious Chicago murder case from the early 90s; and Stephane Gauger's drama SAIGON ELECTRIC (Sat 4/9, 8:30 PM, and Thu 4/14, 8:15 PM), the story of two Vietnamese dancers.

The "closing-night film" (which, oddly, is followed by three more days of screenings) is ONE KINE DAY (Sun-Mon 4/10-4/11, 6 PM). Albert Williams writes, "Chuck Mitsui's debut feature is the dreary, predictable story of a 19-year-old Hawaiian skateboarder (bland newcomer Ryan Greer) whose 15-year-old girlfriend is pregnant with his child. She wants to keep it, but he spends the movie trying to scrounge up money for an abortion. Fired from his dead-end job for chronic tardiness, the feckless youth prowls the fringes of Waikiki in search of the elusive, undefined da kine—Hawaiian pidgin English for 'whatchamacallit'—that will solve all his problems. Mitsui is trying to convey the aimless banality of his characters' lives, but instead he succumbs to it." For a complete festival schedule see siskelfilmcenter.org.  Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State, 312-846-2800, $10, $7 for students, $5 for Film Center members.
