Adapter Jessica Shoemaker has not only reordered scenes and reassigned lines but cut the clown out altogether. Still, there's plenty of goofing around in Rediscover Theatre's cracked-fairy-tale version of Shakespeare's pastoral comedy, particularly when it comes to the cast's jolly-bumpkin handling of the rustics who inhabit the Forest of Arden. The playfulness keeps scene transitions and subplots lively, but sometimes director Matthew Wills and company push things too far—as, for example, when Zack Chaykin plays even melancholy Jaques for laughs. The central romance, meanwhile, suffers from the opposite problem: not enough joy and light find their way into the courtship of Orlando and Rosalind, thanks to Shoemaker's hectoring, humorless performance as one of Shakespeare's most charming heroines. —Zac Thompson
