In Strangeloop Theatre's loose adaptation of Shakespeare's pastoral comedy, characters speak the Bard's lines only when they're at court—i.e., during act one. When the action moves to the forest of Arden, they use a slangy, contemporary paraphrase written by Letitia Guillaud. The results are goofy and irreverent, with lots of playing to the audience and a wink and a nudge at each implausible coincidence. Brad Gunter's staging lacks the invention and panache of similarly deconstructive efforts by, say, the Hypocrites, and all the silliness pretty much demolishes the play's melancholy strain. But there's something to be said for the fact that this version is actually funny. Lord knows there are productions of Shakespeare's comedies that aren't. —Zac Thompson
