Drama, Thriller
Writer-director Nicholas Jarecki (brother of documentary makers Andrew Jarecki and Eugene Jarecki) gives Richard Gere his best role in years, as the respected director of a corrupt Manhattan hedge fund. Having escaped criminal investigation for the shady deals that now threaten his multibillion-dollar enterprise, he lands in hot water after fleeing a car accident that has killled his young mistress. This isn’t very effective as a thriller, though it’s a provocative fable about our ambivalent feelings toward financial elites. Gere plays on his opaque charm, eliciting sympathy even though his character is clearly guilty of wrongdoing; his nuanced, self-referential performance compensates for the shallow plot twists. Susan Sarandon costars as the protagonist’s wife, while Brit Marling, as their grown daughter, suggests the captain of a high school debate team.
