The Experimental Music Yearbook isn’t a publication you can park on your coffee table; in fact, it’s not a book at all. It’s an evolving online archive of live music that speaks to the breadth of contemporary experimental practice—electronic sound manipulation, field recording, performance art, and points beyond. You can stream past recordings at the Yearbook’s website (the collection goes back to 2009) and view the pieces’ scores, many of which use text to suggest options rather than notation to force a particular outcome. Tonight Chicago composer Olivia Block, the Yearbook’s guest editor for 2014, joins forces with local ensemble Aperiodic, which specializes in renditions of indeterminate scores; together they’ll present six compositions. Part of the appeal of this sort of music comes from the surprises that happen when musicians fail to accomplish an impossible task; Block’s “Mirror” asks two performers to play face-to-face, exactly matching each other’s gestures, and nobody has reflexes fast enough to manage that. Also on the program are “Combine, Juxtapose, Delayed Overlap” (2013) by Aperiodic leader Nomi Epstein, which will be added to the Yearbook after it’s played tonight; Jessie Marino’s “Commitment :: Ritual :: BiiM” (2011); James Saunders’s “Choose Who Tells You What to Do” (2014); Albert Ortega’s “Statue” (2011); and Manfred Werder’s “2009/1” (2009). —Bill Meyer
