Rachel York paused for applause when she made her first entrance on opening night. Only there wasn't any. Even the highly partisan audience members that tend to populate such events didn't seem to register York as somebody special. But she quickly changed that. In the role of tough-talking chanteuse Reno Sweeney, York may go a little heavy on the Mae West locutions, yet she's unquestionably the klieg-bright center of this touring production. Well, she and Cole Porter's songs are. It's hard to believe that so many Porter classics—including "You're the Top," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and, yes, "Anything Goes"—debuted in a single, irreverent 1934 musical about romantic high jinks and mistaken identities aboard a luxury liner. They did, though. And together with York—plus turns by Fred Applegate as a criminal cupid, Joyce Chittick as a happy slut, and Dennis Kelly channeling Charlie Ruggles as a rich old alcoholic—they make up for the show's most glaring deficiency: its lack of a charismatic leading man. —Tony Adler
