Anything Can Happen

An advertising copywriter saves the life of a crime lord's most trusted lieutenant and finds himself embroiled in a gang war. This 2003 Indian feature thanks Takeshi Kitano, Quentin Tarantino, and the Coen brothers for inspiration, though in true Bollywood fashion the absurdist violence and genre jamming are buttressed by romantic interludes and production numbers. It's all pretty familiar, and the plot is laden with improbable coincidences, but you have to like a movie whose opening title announces that “the story has been plagiarized from several films.” Shashanka Ghosh provided the brisk direction. In Hindi with subtitles. 138 min.
