For his gorgeous new album, Seed (Spectrum Spools), Chicagoan Brett Naucke set himself strict parameters: he recorded loads of improvised patterns with a single patch on his modular synthesizer, creating skittering percussive pops, lush flotation-tank swells, ominous long tones, and sometimes spooky, sometimes daring melodic figures. The lion’s share of his work came next, though, when he meticulously edited, layered, and built tracks from that voluminous library of sounds. The eight resulting pieces employ a surprisingly diverse assortment of moods and attacks, considering they share such a narrow starting point. “Lost Inside Your Houses” flows naturally, opening with stark industrial bleeps, hums, and squelches and then blossoming into an almost ritualistic calm, with bell-like tones initiating a shift toward pretty melodic fragments. Naucke demonstrates sophisticated instincts, transforming his raw material into music that feels organic and never drifts into aimlessness or gets bogged down by repetition. For this performance he’s busting out the same patch he used to make Seed, though he’ll come up with new shapes and sounds on the fly tonight. His performance, without the album’s overdubbing and editing, will echo the recording only in the most general of ways, and should be more direct and minimal. —Peter Margasak Anthony Janas headlines “A Night of Modular Synthesis”; Andy Ortmann, Peter Speer, Brett Naucke, the Green Pasture Happiness, and Keven Kalay open.
