Israeli independent Yair Hochner—whose powerful study of young hustlers, Good Boys, played at the 2005 festival—directed this quirky study of gay and lesbian life in Tel Aviv. Among its characters are a world-weary journalist researching alien abductions; a librarian on the brink of turning 30; his sister, who wants to visit the south pole; and their nagging but nurturing mother. The film is primarily a naturalistic chronicle of casual couplings and uncouplings, but its dashes of camp and whimsy reveal the influence of John Waters and Federico Fellini. In a movie packed with beautiful young people and steamy love scenes, the show stealer turns out to be the mother, played in drag by Divine-like comedian Noam Huberman (aka Miss Laila Carry). In Hebrew with subtitles. 110 min.
