Another Earth

Not since Shane Carruth's Primer (2004) has a sci-fi movie done so much with so little. Written by Brit Marling (who also stars) and Mike Cahill (who also directed), this low-budget drama takes a familiar story of guilt and repentance but deepens it greatly by introducing a powerful science-fantasy wrinkle. Astronomers announce their discovery of a new planet hospitable to human life, and that night a promising young high schooler (Marling), searching for the planet in the sky as she drives, collides with another car and kills a woman and her child. Four years later, released from prison and working as a school janitor, she insinuates herself into the life of the traumatized husband and father (William Mapother), who survived the wreck but never learned the other driver's identity. By now commercial voyages to the new planet have begun, and rumors circulate that "Earth 2," which now dwarfs the moon in the night sky, is inhabited by our identical twins, whose lives are untainted by our bad life choices.
