Re: “The firefighters' union puts its faith in—gulp—Mayor Rahm

Scott James Deering , you don't know what you are talking about. No , wrong not every firefighter is a paramedic and , wrong again not every paramedic is a firefighter. Infact out of the 5,000 members on the Chicago Fire Department only about 230 are dual trained as fire fighter paramedics. A fire engine or truck could arrive for several reasons, 1.) an ambulance is too far away and therefore have an elongated estimated time of arrival or 2) the chief complaint warrants a higher level of response, because its kinda hard to carry 100 lbs of equipment and a patient at the same time rendering care quickly and safely. Furthermore, FYI EMS calls typically make up 90 percent of the fire departments work load ,responses and demand for services . Most times 75ambulances to cover a 225 square mile area that comprise Chicago, is not enough. We do have some paramedic equipped fire trucks and engines and many first response fire suppression trucks and engines with EMTS that help pick up the slack , when the Ambulances are too far away.
