Anna, in the Darkness | Dream Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
Dream Theatre Company's annual Halloween offering is a tense, one-character thriller in which a schoolteacher hunkers down in her basement while a mob of angry Bible thumpers gathers outside. The trouble started when Anna tried to get her special-ed students interested in reading by assigning horror fiction as homework. That decision, in conjunction with Anna's role in a grisly school bus accident, has convinced her neighbors that she's a Satan-worshipping witch who must be destroyed. Jeremy Menekseoglu's genuinely scary staging of his own script takes place in an actual basement that's dark, claustrophobic, and filled with sinister-looking clutter. As Anna, Megan Merrill contributes an absorbing and destabilizing sense of ambiguity. It's never entirely clear whether she's telling us the truth or having a massive paranoid delusion. —Zac Thompson
