Toronto native Andrew Rathbun is one of the most thoughtful and curious saxophonists to emerge in New York over the past decade. He’s explored different instrumental settings, from duo to big band, for his tuneful and harmonically rich compositions, and he’s sharpened his prowess as an improviser—something he demonstrates most effectively in his trio with bassist Scott Lee and drummer Jeff Hirschfield, which gracefully folds rigorous free jazz and meticulous, intimate chamberlike music into a matrix of brisk postbop. All three members contribute tunes, and on their new album, Shadow Forms II (Steeplechase), they maintain an easy rapport whether swinging like mad or exploring color and space—“Hi and Lo,” for instance, is a series of arco bass phrases and striated alto flurries over snare-and-cymbal patter. This is the group’s Chicago debut. —Peter Margasak
