Andrew D'Angelo, Jeff Parker, Joshua Abrams, and Mike Reed

When: Sat., July 27, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $8
Tonight explosive New York saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo makes his first visit to Chicago since 2011, when he played with Agogic, a malleable quartet he was coleading with trumpeter Cuong Vu. D’Angelo brings a wry, biting sensibility to everything he does. After recovering from brain cancer in 2009, he sold T-shirts emblazoned with a CAT scan of his head; he used to lead a group called the Gay Disco Trio, and though it was a trio and he is gay it didn’t play anything remotely like disco; and he balances confrontation and self-mockery in his extroverted solos. He’s a remarkably strong improviser and gifted composer, and lately he’s been pouring his energy into his own high-grade big band. Tonight D’Angelo will be accompanied by Chicago musicians Jeff Parker (guitar), Mike Reed (drums), and Joshua Abrams (bass); they’ll play a mostly improvised set that might also include some of D’Angelo’s tunes. —Peter Margasak
