And Then He Hit Me

To the editors:

Thank you Ms. Anonymous for having the courage to write the truth about Dr. Bruno Bettelheim [Letters, April 6]. I was a student at The Orthogenic School between the years 1952- 60. Everything that Ms. Anonymous wrote about was completely true.

Many years ago I saw Dr. B. being interviewed on Good Morning America with David Hartman. I was so upset by all the untruths I heard him say I wanted to write or call the TV station, but my husband convinced me that they would only say it's the word of a crazy person; why bother getting yourself upset over it. Let it pass.

I just wanted all of your readers to know that what Ms. Anonymous wrote is not the writing of a "crazy person." It happened. The horror stories of what he did to us are far greater than anyone can put down on paper. For me the final straw came a year after I left the school. (They call it graduation.) I came back to the school for a visit. I was 19 at the time. He came into the room where I was visiting one of the kids I knew. He came over to me and instead of embracing me or saying hi, how are you--he hit me.
