As cute as can be, this tidy little love story by Claude Lelouch ends with the lovers meeting for the first time. The entire two-hour film is prologue, an attempt to relate the beginning of a love affair to the entire cultural, economic, and political history of the 20th century. And if Lelouch's sensibilities are too flimsy to substantiate his quasi-epic ambitions, the film nevertheless offers some cozy comforts and more than a few inside filmmaking jokes. Marked by the quintessentially Lelouchian peripatetic camera, the film is most satisfying when the gyroscopes and the dollies are put away.
