A work of cynical demagoguery disguised as absurdist satire, this Al Pacino lungbuster is regrettably well directed by Norman Jewison. His slick, impersonal style grants rhythm and credence to some highly dubious assumptions about the court system, pandering to low emotionality to make a specious moral argument. As always, Jewison seems oblivious to the deeper implications of his material, but his hired gun status shouldn't excuse him entirely. To make an uncommitted film about commitment is the height of irresponsibility. With Jack Warden, John Forsythe, Christine Lahti, and Lee Strasberg.
