And God Created Wigmakers

To the editors:

While Tori Marlan's article was excellent, her biblical analysis is deficient ["Is That a Wig?," August 20].

Marlan states that if the water of bitterness "made her stomach sick, she was judged guilty of being unfaithful." The text--Numbers 5:22--reads " . . . make thy belly to swell and thy thigh to fall away."

What this means is if the woman goes through with the test and has been unfaithful she will die.

Marlan is correct, however, in citing that chapter as the basis for hair covering. Numbers 5:18 reads: "And the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and let the hair of the woman's head go loose." From this it was inferred married women should not appear in public bareheaded.
