In much the same way albums are shipped with stickers advising parents about explicit lyrical content, Anamanaguchi's SoundCloud page should have an epilepsy warning, like the one before Kanye's "All of the Lights" video. Every one of the band's tracks is a synapse-searing overload, with guitars, drums, and eight-bit synthesizers blaring hypersugary neon-pop melodies at highly caffeinated tempos—prolonged exposure will probably lead to some sort of neurological damage. But it's exactly Anamanaguchi's deranged disregard for the limitations of the average human brain that sets them apart and above all the other NES-worshipping eight-bit groups. Even for those who can take it, it's probably not the kind of flavor you want going on all the time. Still, if you want to feel like you collected all the stars and beat the final boss and are being serenaded by a pixelated anime version of Andrew W.K. while tripping on about a pound of psilocybin mushrooms, there's really no better option. —Miles Raymer Fang Island and Moon King open.
