You have to admire an actor with the guts (and stamina) to take on a show that runs close to two hours using just his voice and body. That's what British actor David Payne does here—quite engagingly, from a script he adapted from the writings of his fellow Brit C.S. Lewis. It certainly helps that Lewis himself was such a lively and witty eccentric. And that Payne’s one-man show so deftly explores the many facets of Lewis’s fascinating life, from his experiences in WWI and life as an Oxford don to his lifelong friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien and his own career as a writer of books for both children (The Chronicles of Narnia) and adults (The Screwtape Letters and other Christian apologia). But in the end it’s Payne’s obvious relish for both the material and the man that carries the day. —Jack Helbig
